Tree Excitement

A friend and I were peacefully watching a DVD movie last night (The Corpse Bride—such an epic), when an enormous, long-lasting crashing noise interrupted us. His first thought was that someone was setting off fireworks. My first thought (I'm such a romantic) was that a garbage truck had dropped a dumpster. The real truth was that an oak tree had chosen the quietest evening for weeks to drop an enormous limb on the neighbor's carport. Nobody was hurt, but lots of damage was done, and we all got something to talk about for weeks. Whole neighborhood gathered to say, "Would you just look at that!"

I think the cause was that one squirrel too many ran out onto the limb.

The couch is on its way

Yep. Yesterday I took the plunge and bought the couch. I actually paid more for it than for my first car. The color is officially "Persimmon" (which works out to sort of a reddish orange). I got to this by asking the sales lady what sort of couch would work well if someone dumped pizza on it. That resulted in leather (easy to wipe off) with a special treatment (to make it even easier) and a reddish color (just in case there's a stain).

Now I need to get ready. The apartment has been declining into chaos for a couple of years now, and I don't want the couch to feel angry or upset, so I'm cleaning. Began with the back bedroom (computer room). Did the carpet shampoo etc. Now my main issue is several boxes of stuff I really don't want to get rid of but never look at. Attic and basement stuff for most people, but I don't have an attic or a basement. My great old 486SX computer, which I built myself from spare parts (but it's so out of date that I really don't know anything it would be useful for). A painting of my aunt—so hideous that it kills bugs. The box that my daughter's wine gift arrived in (nice wooden box that reminds me of the gift). And books! Dozens of books sent from publishers who hope that I'll tell my freshmen to buy them. Old youth ministry books I'll never use. Books from my graduate studies. Where to put them?
